PACE reps criticize Armenian response on post-election crisis
The recommendations of the Armenian parliament’s ad hoc committee on the March 2008 post-election crisis are "comprehensive, although not complete", the co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Armenia of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) concluded. Georges Colombier of France and John Prescott of the United Kingdom said in a joint statement that the recommendations "were regrettably not complemented by a comprehensive analysis of the events of 1 and 2 March, which they felt was rather one-sided, and gave the impression that the committee wanted to avoid criticising the authorities."
The opposition had refused to recognize the outcome of the election, taking to the streets. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds of others injured and arrested during the cruel putdown of the mass protests.
The co-rapporteurs strongly regretted the almost total lack of analysis of developments that followed these events, and expressed concern at the lack of concrete results from the inquiry into the 10 deaths that occurred during the unrest that followed the country’s 2008 presidential election.
Colombier and Prescott recommended the continuation of a special body of the parliament to oversee implementation of the report’s recommendations and conduct further inquiries where necessary, adding they would be closely following this matter and report back to PACE’s Monitoring Committee at a future meeting.*
