Behind-the-scenes power struggle underway in Armenia: reports
The political situation in Armenia is exacerbating, with struggle
between the groups of oligarchs in the ruling elite reaching its
peak.
Armenia Today news agency reported that Parliament Speaker Ovik Abramian, the leader of Prosperous Armenia party represented in the ruling coalition, Gagik Charukian, and Prosecutor-General Anvae Ovsepian have formed an alliance, which is aimed at toppling the incumbent President Serzh Sarkisian. The alliance is strengthened by the marriage of Abramian’s son to Charukian’s daughter. Some commentators believe that the parliament speaker will avail of his brother-in-law’s assistance in his endeavors to overthrow Sarkisian.
The local Aykakan Jamanak newspaper said the two brothers-in-law are likely to initiate a parliamentary impeachment procedure against the incumbent president at a time of tensions surrounding Turkey-Armenia relations and settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. The impeachment is likely to be supported by Prosperous Armenia, the nationalist Dashnaksutyun Party, as well as several independent lawmakers and even some members of the ruling Republic Party. Outside the legislature, the initiative will be backed by former foreign minister Vardan Oskanian, who heads the Sivilitas foundation. If the impeachment passes, Abramian will assume the helm of state.
Aykakan Jamanak said, further, that the forces prompting Sarkisian to step down, regardless of how the developments unfold, will not allow former president Levon Ter-Petrosian, who heads the Armenian National Congress, to come to power again. Force may be used against the opposition, if necessary, to prevent this from happening, the publication said.
Aram Safarian, an executive of Prosperous Armenia, neither confirmed nor dismissed the circulating reports about plans to overthrow the incumbent leader, declining comment.
Abramian, who aims at presidency, is reportedly working hard to appoint his supporters to the power-wielding agencies. Therefore, the number of his backers is growing in many government agencies – from the National Security Service to the police and tax inspectorate, reports say.*
