Aliyev: oil and gas enough for years to come
Azerbaijan possesses tremendous oil and gas resources that will
suffice both for meeting domestic demand and supplying importers in
the coming years, President Ilham Aliyev told the opening of a
major gas pipeline from Turkey to Greece that will take Caspian gas
to energy-thirsty European markets.
"The production of 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas is anticipated
from the Shahdaniz field alone. Other gas deposits of the country
contain ample reserves as well," he told the high-profile ceremony
in Turkey on Sunday.
The head of state said that just the proven reserves of gas amount
to some 2 trillion cubic meters.
"But we know from past experience that as work continues and new
wells are drilled, this volume is rising. In other words,
Azerbaijan will fully ensure both its own energy security and
contribute to that of its partners for many years to come," Aliyev
said.
The newly-opened 300-km conduit will take natural gas from the
Caspian region and the Middle East to Italy and the rest of Western
Europe through Turkey to Greece.
