Ankara-Yerevan rapprochement to aid Garabagh settlement: German diplomat
Normalization of Turkey-Armenia relations will positively affect
settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh
conflict, Germany’s Ambassador in Yerevan Hans-Jochen Schmidt was
quoted by the Armenia Today news agency as saying on Friday.
Schmidt told a press conference that the agreement on mending ties signed by Ankara and Yerevan last month was "a bold step" by the two governments, calling for an immediate parliamentary approval of the documents.
The protocols, signed by Turkey and Armenia in Zurich on October 10, aim to establish diplomatic ties and reopen the two countries’ shared border. However, the documents require ratification in both countries’ parliaments to take effect, and Ankara has made clear it could fully normalize ties with Yerevan only after the Garabagh conflict has been settled.
"The sooner the two parliaments approve the protocols, the better," the ambassador said. "In particular, if Turkey seeks to be a key player in the region, it should display political will and prove, by ratifying the protocols, that it is interested in stability in the South Caucasus."*
