Armenian terror group urges to reject Turkey accord
An Armenian terror group has called for turning down the agreement on mending ties signed with Turkey earlier this month and "going back to the legally substantiated demands to reinstate Armenians’ rights."
Armenia and Turkey signed protocols on October 10 in Switzerland to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their sealed borders, in a bid to normalize ties, marred by decades of hostility due to Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Yerevan’s claims on 1915 "genocide" in Ottoman Turkey. The documents have yet to be ratified in both countries’ parliaments.
Tigran Pashabedjian, the coordinator of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA), believes ratifying the protocols will not strengthen security in the volatile region and, on the contrary, will increase risks. He alleged that the documents will essentially invalidate the 1948 UN convention envisoining "punishment for ‘genocide’ and countering this crime."
ASALA has sent a letter to the presidents of Armenia, Turkey, the United States, Russia and France, the heads of the European Union and the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. The letter expressed concern over what the group describes as threats posed by the Armenia-Turkey protocols and calls on superpowers and influential organizations to take action countering their enforcement.
Pashabedjian maintained that the countries which attended the signing of the protocols in Zurich will be responsible for any potential fallout from the reconciliation agreement.
The protocols’ signing was attended by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Russian and French Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Bernard Kouchner.
ASALA sees a way out of the situation in "building nationwide, all-Armenian defense or a change of power and formation of an independent government."*
