Armenian businessmen to open office in Turkey

20 October 2009 22:45 (UTC+04:00)
The Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen of Armenia, or UMBA, will open a representation in Turkey, according to the Turkish Haberler.com website.
Agreement to that end was reached during a meeting of Armenian entrepreneurs at the Turkish Industrialists` and Businessmen`s Association (TUSIAD). The businessmen were visiting the country to attend last Wednesday`s soccer match between the two countries` national teams played in the Turkish town of Bursa.
Currently, the Armenian business union is maintaining offices only in Los Angeles, Moscow and Brussels, the cities with a strong Armenian diaspora. Noyan Soyak, deputy chairman of the Brussels-based Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council, which has been informally operating since 1997, will serve as the union`s representative in Istanbul. Initially, the organization aims at implementing the Gars-Gumri railway project.
Armenia and Turkey have been at odds and the border between the two countries has been closed since 1993 due to Armenia`s policy of occupation and genocide claims. On October 10, two protocols -- which ultimately seek to open the Turkish-Armenian border - were signed. However, the documents require parliamentary approval, and Ankara has repeatedly pledged that the border will not open until the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict has been fairly resolved.
