CIS leaders agree to join efforts against global crunch

13 October 2009 22:26 (UTC+04:00)
The leaders and top officials of the former Soviet republics meeting in Chisinau, Moldova on Friday agreed to jointly combat the aftermath of the dire economic crisis.
Participants in the Commonwealth of Independent States summit instructed their governments to work toward further liberalization of trade and refrain from protectionism and other steps restricting access of foreign goods to the domestic markets of the CIS member states.
Also, a decision was passed to declare 2010 the Year of the Great Patriotic War Veterans in the CIS to mark the 65th anniversary of victory over fascism in World War II.
The closed-door summit was attended by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, and the acting Moldovan president. Also participating were the prime ministers of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, Turkmenistan`s deputy prime minister, and Uzbekistan`s parliament speaker.
CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told a news conference following the summit that it was constructive ``despite the fears and worries of its organizers.``
While the attendees assembled for a group photo prior to the meeting, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev noted that the neckties of all presidents were of the same color. ``We agreed to wear red ties to look different from our counterparts who were represented on the level of premiers,`` he said, smiling.
Chairmanship in the CIS will be transferred from Moldova to Russia in 2010. President Medvedev invited his counterparts to an informal meeting, which will be held on the sidelines of the events dedicated to the Patriotic War anniversary in May next year.
