Armenia may withdraw from some occupied areas of Karabakh in 2019
By Abdul Kerimkhanov
Serious progress seems to take place in the Karabakh settlement, since even some pro-Armenian political scientists can no longer deny what is obvious.
Russian political analyst Stanislav Tarasov said that the Armenian side will return a number of occupied regions in June 2019.
Touching upon the meeting of Armenia's Prime Ministera and the President of Azerbaijan in Davos, Tarasov stressed that serious discussions are taking place on a specific project that is on the negotiating table.
Moreover, the expert believes that the sides are currently talking about trust mechanisms.
Little is known about the nature of the negotiations, but one thing remains unchanged. Although Pashinyan has vowed for the participation of the puppet regime which illegally occupies Azerbaijani territories, no step was taken in this direction.
Tarasov considers it highly probable that Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan will sign an agreement on Karabakh this year, in which the Armenian side will have to withdraw from several regions through indirect compromises.
If Yerevan takes such a sensible step, then most likely Turkey will return to the Armenian-Turkish protocols and ratify them and diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia will be restored.
“Azerbaijan declares that it needs to return part of the regions, it speaks openly about it, but what Armenia is going to do is incomprehensible, the Armenian side is silent," said Tarasov, adding that if the Armenian side would not talk about the return of the regions, Baku would not communicate with Pashinyan, but would speak about the war.
Thus, the Russian political analyst said something that Armenia itself is afraid to admit. Namely, the fact that the Karabakh settlement, which the Armenian side delayed for a quarter of a century, is closer than ever before. And, of course the Karabakh issue will not be resolved in favor of Armenia.
Baku does not give up its previous positions. Azerbaijan repels from the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the Madrid principles, where it is said that Nagorno-Karabakh is a part of Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani leadership does not see Nagorno-Karabakh outside Azerbaijan. Baku is ready to give Nagorno-Karabakh the widest status within Azerbaijan. Then, the restoration process of these territories will begin.
There is not a single international document in the world saying that Nagorno-Karabakh has the right to be a separate state or part of Armenia. It’s time for Armenia to get used to it.
