The Eastern Partnership (EaP) ministerial was held in Luxemburg, where Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani once again emphasized that his country’s ultimate goal is EU membership, Agenda reports.

Georgia has a very ambitious plan. Our eventual goal is the full membership of the EU and we need to take more effective steps to attain this goal. I spoke to partners on the roadmap and the principles on which it is based. A higher level of involvement from their part is needed,” Zalkaliani said.

The participants, which included EU leaders and representatives from six EaP member countries, discussed the progress made by the countries involved in the initiative, the future prospects of the Eastern Partnership, and challenges facing the region.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry reported that special mention was made regarding the progress of the implementation of the EU’s Association Agreement with Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, the launch of visa-free travel between Georgia and the EU, and the ways to deepen trade relations with the EU and the EaP countries.

It was highlighted that 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership format,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry stated.

Speaking about the importance of celebrating the anniversary, Zalkaliani said that the international conference in Georgia’s western coastal Batumi city will be dedicated to marking this occasion.

EaP is a joint initiative involving the EU, its member states and six Eastern European Partners: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

The Eastern Partnership aims to increase open democracy, prosperity, and stability in the region.
