Israeli envoy`s visit to Armenia shrouded in secrecy
Shemi Tzur, the newly-appointed Israeli ambassador
to Armenia, has arrived in the country, reports said, though his
arrival is being kept confidential and Armenian officials have made
no media statements to that end.
After reports on the Tel-Aviv-based diplomat`s arrival were carried by the Israeli media, Tigran Balayan, the spokesman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry, commented that Armenia`s foreign minister hosts an average of ten ambassadors every day, and there is no need to inform the public about every meeting.
But, given that the Israeli diplomatic representation is headquartered in Tel-Aviv, reasons for the visit being kept secret are of interest.
Some Armenian media speculated that Tzur`s visit is linked to the recent crash of an Iran-Armenia bound plane.
The Russian-made TU-154 passenger plane, en route from Tehran to Yerevan, crashed in northwestern Iran in July, killing over 150 passengers and 16 crew members.
Italian media have reported that there were weapons slated for Hezbollah on board, and Armenia served as a transit state for arms deliveries to the Lebanese movement. Italy`s Corriere della sera newspaper reported that besides baggage, the plane`s freight section contained large quantities of detonators that were to be transported to Lebanon through Armenia, Turkey and Syria.
