Unemployment rate surging in Armenia over global crunch

18 August 2009 22:51 (UTC+04:00)
The unemployment rate is rapidly increasing in Armenia due to the dire world economic crisis.
Whereas the number of the jobless in the South Caucasus republic constituted 85,000 in the beginning of 2009, the figure has now reached 101,000, Vazgen Khachikian, who heads the social provision service at the country`s labor ministry, told Novosti Armenii news agency.
Some experts charge that these are official figures and the actual unemployment rate is much higher.
Khachikian admitted that the number of jobs may continue dwindling in Armenia in the backdrop of the global recession.
Armenia`s statistics service has confirmed the data provided by the ministry official. It said that, whereas the country`s unemployment rate stood at 6.3% in January-June 2008, the indicator increased to 6.7 percent in the same period of 2009.
Given that the unemployment rate in Armenia is rising by the day, citizens disgruntled with their living standards are likely to start staging mass protests soon, analysts say. Public resentment may be exacerbated by widespread discontent with the policies being pursued by the authorities.
