Iranian border patrol agents assigned to Bazargan border crossing in West Azarbaijan Province (northwestern Iran bordering Turkey) arrested 17 citizens and foreign nationals in an attempted human smuggling event on Oct. 11, IRNA reported.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. (GMT +3:30), trucks containing occupants arrived at the checkpoint. Upon questioning, the agents discovered that men, women and children in the back seat were reportedly Afghan and Pakistani nationals illegally trying to cross the border to Turkey, according to the public relations office of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration.

The drivers were Iranian citizens and were arrested for alien smuggling. Agents also arrested the foreign nationals, and seized the vehicles.
