Armenia may run short of soldiers
Armenia will soon face the problem of shortage of
soldiers, local military experts have concluded.
According to pundits, hopeless Armenian youngsters are evading military service. Also, many young people are leaving the country due to widespread unemployment.
Another contributor to understaffed military is the demographic situation. Thus, since 1990s birth rate in Armenia has sharply dropped. Whereas 39,000 men were born in Armenia in 1991, in 1995, the figure fell to 25,700.
Given that men born in 1991 are to serve the army in 2009, it is not hard to predict a further deterioration of the conscription problem in the coming years.
Armenian officials acknowledge that birth rate has not improved since the Garabagh war with Azerbaijan in the early 1990s. For instance, only 24,000 men were born in Armenia last year.
