Japan to invest $150 mn in Iran for earthquake studies

Head of Structural and Earthquake Research Center (SERC) of Amirkabir University of Technology said on Saturday that the Japanese government would invest $150 mn for earthquake engineering studies in Iran, IRNA reports.
Numerous researches are carried out every day in the field of
earthquake engineering, some of which require accurate experiments
and equipment.
Located in the world’s most quake-prone area, Pacific Ocean’s “Ring
of Fire”, Japan has accumulated great experience and knowledge in
building equipment needed for conducting scientific earthquake
engineering researches.
Head of Structural and Earthquake Research Center (SERC), Amirkabir
University of Technology said to the Islamic Republic News Agency
that Japan would cooperate with Amirkabir University of Technology
in building a modern shaking table.
Alireza Rahaei added that making the table would cost around $20
mn and would take 5 years to complete.
An academic delegation from Japan International Cooperation Agency
visited scientific institutions in Tehran including Amirkabir
University during the last week to prepare for the project.
Iranian institutions perform initial analytical studies while
Japanese counterparts are in charge of experiments as well as parts
of design and manufacturing.
Iran sits on major seismological fault lines, which makes it one of
the world's most quake-prone countries.
A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the Kermanshah Province’s Ezgeleh
region in western Iran on November 12, 2017, killing at least 620
people and injuring over 12,000.
The earthquake damaged 10 cities and 1,930 villages of the province
and about 100,000 residential units.
