Third of Azeris laud economic growth
Azerbaijan is among those countries in the
Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) having the greatest number
of citizens who remain optimistic about the country`s economic
development, a Russian research center has concluded.
32% of Azeris praised the South Caucasus republic`s growth, according to a recent survey of the all-Russian Center for Public Opinion Research.
Uzbekistan leads the way, with 49% of those responding to polls praising economic development there. Also in the top five are Tajikistan (23%), Kazakhstan (19%) and Kyrgyzstan (12%). In Russia, the figure is considerably lower, at 7%. Most often, Russian citizens described their county`s economic growth as medium - 46%, while another 43% consider it poor or very poor.
Negative assessments were common among Ukrainians and Latvians (86% and 87% respectively).
Uzbeks are the most optimistic for their future, with 69% of those polled saying the situation is likely to change for the better in a year. In Russia, only 20% predict positive changes, and the most respondents - 38% - believe the situation will remain the same.
Armenians are the most pessimistic, with over one-third of those polled - 35% - saying the situation is bound to deteriorate.
89% of respondents in Uzbekistan are happy with their living standards, followed by Estonians, with 74%. The figure is 70% in Kyrgyzstan, 67% in Kazakhstan and 47% in Russia.
Those found unhappy with their living standards are mainly Ukrainians and Armenians - 62% each, while the figures show 60% in Georgia and 58% in Moldova.

This problem was cited as the main challenge in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia (47-48%). In other countries, the number of people disturbed by price increases is high, as well. Unemployment is the greatest concern for Tajiks, Uzbeks (58% each) and Latvians (53%).
