Turkish MP fined for claiming leader`s mother Armenian
A lawmaker representing the People`s Republic Party
of Turkey has been fined 1 Turkish Lira for saying that President
Abdullah Gul`s mother is Armenian.
Speaking on the signature-collection campaign launched by a group of intellectuals and called "We apologize to the Armenians", which aims to recognize the so-called Armenian genocide, Gul said the MP, Canan Aritman, had claimed the President`s mother was Armenian.
According to CNN Turk TV channel, the president took the MP to court, urging it to fine the lawmaker to a token 1 Turkish Lira.
The court ruled that, while commenting on the campaign, the president indicated that everyone has the right to express an opinion regarding the 1915-1918 developments, which does not mean he supports the campaign or that his mother is Armenian.
