One of the largest hydro power plants in Tajikistan can be included in the “Central Asia” project.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his Tajik counterpart Kokhir Rasulzoda held talks in Dushanbe on May 31. They discussed issues of economic cooperation and its integrated development, as well as work on ongoing projects such as Sangtuda HPP-1, the press service of the Russian government said in a message.

“Our largest project for today is Sangtudinskaya HPP-1. I remember how, almost 10 years ago, with respected Emomali Sharipovich (President of Tajikistan), this station was opened. We know how important this project is for Tajikistan. It is no less important for Russia, the knowledge of our specialists, our technologies, our investments are combined in it. Therefore, it is in the common interest to maximize the impact of its work,” Medvedev said at a press conference following the talks.

Medvedes said that it is possible while answering the question on whether Sangtuda HPP-1 could be included in the regional energy project “Central Asia” in the long term.

Sangtuda HPP-1 JSC (a joint Russian-Tajik company) is one of the three largest hydro power plants in Tajikistan located on the Vakhsh river. Construction commenced during the Soviet period in the 1980s, but halted in the beginning of the 1990s due to lack of financing when the station was about 20 percent complete. An agreement with Russia allowed restarting the construction, with four units entering service in 2008–2009.

Thanks to the work of the station, Tajikistan's capacity to export electricity in the summer increased to 1.5 billion kWh.
