Armenian politician barred from entering Georgia
Georgian frontier guards have blocked an Armenian
politician from entering the country.
Shirak Torosyan, the MP who represents Armenia`s ruling Republican Party, told journalists that he was heading to Tbilisi on Friday as part of his country`s delegation at the invitation of Germany`s Friedrich Naumann Foundation. During the planned visit, the Armenian representatives were to meet with Georgian officials, politicians and public figures to discuss bilateral relations and problems facing residents of Georgia`s Samtskhe-Javakhetia region, densely populated by Armenians.
According to Torosyan, all other members of the Armenian delegation were allowed to cross the border. He believes there were no grounds for Georgian frontier guards` blocking his entry.
Tigran Balayan, the spokesman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry, told Russian Interfax news agency that Yerevan had sent a note of protest to Georgia`s Foreign Ministry. "We demand an official explanation in this regard," he said.
Tbilisi has not yet issued an official statement to that end.
Torosyan comes from Samtskhe-Javakhetia, where he was born.
