Russia keen on joining Iran-Armenia railway project
Russia intends to participate in the project to build a railway line between Iran and Armenia, the spokesman for the state-run Russian Railways company has said.
Dmitry Pertsev made the announcement during a phone interview with the Baku-based ANS TV channel. He said, however, that the issue is currently at the stage of discussions and no documents have been signed.
"As you know, Armenia`s railways are being managed by Russia, and one of our tasks is to bring in revenues to those railways. This being said, the Iran-Armenia rail line is attractive in terms of forging normal railway links," Pertsev said, adding that the sides are currently negotiating Russia`s joining the project.
Iranian and Armenian leaders signed an agreement in April on building a rail line between the two countries in Tehran. The railway will be 470 km long, of which 60 km will lie in Iran and 410 km in Armenia. The five-year project is initially estimated to cost $1-1.2 billion. Construction operations are due to begin shortly.
Armenia remains sidelined from regional projects due to its policy of aggression against Azerbaijan and only has a rail link with Georgia.
