Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the Greek judicial authorities to make a final decision on the extradition of persons suspected of having ties with the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), to Turkey, the country’s media reported on December 7.

“Turkey has been long fighting against terrorist organizations,” Erdogan said at a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Athens. “Greece is one of the countries with which it is easiest for us to find mutual understanding in the issue of combating terrorism. We immediately started a dialogue with the Greek prime minister on the return of FETO members to Turkey.”

Erdogan noted that the death penalty and tortures are not applied in Turkey.

“Therefore, the extradition of this group of people is quite possible,” Erdogan said.

Eight Turkish servicemen fled the country by helicopter on July 16, 2016 after a military coup attempt and landed in the airport of Greece’s Dedeagac (Alexandroupoli) city.

On July 15, 2016, Turkish authorities said a military coup attempt took place in the country as a group of servicemen announced about transition of power to them. However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed.

More than 250 people were killed during the attempted coup.

Turkish authorities are accusing Fethullah Gulen, who lives in the US, of supporting the attempted coup.
