Top Kazakh official arrested over arms deal violations
Kazakhstan`s National Security Ministry has arrested
the country`s deputy minister of defense due to violations
committed in an arms deal signed with Israel in 2006.
The law enforcement agencies explained that Lieutenant-General Kazhimurat Maermanov`s was charged with misuse of state property and abuse of power. Further, Maermanov is accused of irregularities regarding the agreements on the purchase of up-to-date military artillery concluded with Israeli firms.
Under the deal, worth $190 million, an Israeli company was also expected to assist in the production of weapons-grade spare parts in the Central Asian state. But Kenzhebulat Bekhazarov, the National Security Ministry spokesman, said 80 per cent of those spare parts have been found to be unusable, resulting in an $82 million loss to the state.
