Iran, Armenia sign memo on rail line
Iran and Armenia have signed a MoU in Yerevan to
confirm their interest in building a railway line between the two
countries. The Novosti Armenia news agency reports that the
document was signed by Armenian Transport Minister Gurgen Sarkisian
and Hamid Behbahani, Iran`s Roads and Transport Minister.
The Iranian minister said that the railway line will be 470 km long, of which 60 km will lie in Iran and 410 km in Armenia. He added that this line would duplicate the Great Silk Way and would take three to four years to build.
Iranian media report that Tehran has promised to assist Yerevan in transporting cargo to foreign countries.
Observers note that Armenia remains sidelined from regional projects due to its policy of aggression against Azerbaijan and only has a railway link with Georgia.
