Georgia`s Armenians seeking autonomy
Georgia`s Samtskhe-Javakhetia region, which is
densely populated by Armenians, has turned into a source of concern
for the Georgian government as local separatist groups, backed by
Armenia, are seeking autonomy from Georgia. Armenian organizations,
which are taking advantage of mounting political tensions to pursue
their aims, have issued a joint statement leveling their
claims.
The BBC reported that the Armenians are mostly demanding a self-government in the region. The statement claims that the Georgian authorities are attempting to divert public attention from major problems faced by the local population under the influence of certain groups in the region.
Javakhetia`s public and political groups have maintained that the main challenges facing local residents remain unresolved and that numerous complaints in this regard had been repeatedly made to Georgia`s central government. Among the problems cited are preserving national wealth, as well as political, cultural, educational and socio-economic issues. Javakhetia`s Armenians are seeking broader credentials in local government bodies, granting Armenian the status of a language on the level of the state tongue, ensuring the rights of their densely-settled ethnic minorities, and putting an end to an alleged Georgian government policy to alter the region`s demographics. The statement also maintained that "real" Armenian-Georgian friendship is possible only after the outstanding problems have been solved.
