The Syrian army over the last month freed 52 settlements from militants and cleared more than 1,700 square kilometers of the territory, the Head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoy said at a briefing.

The Syrian government troops continue conducting combat operations against terrorists of Islamic State and Dzhebhat en-Nusra with the support of Russian ASF.

"Over the past month the Syrian army liberated 52 settlements, cleared 1,702 square kilometers of the territory from militants," RIA Novosti quoted Rudskoy as saying.

The number of settlements in Syria that joined the ceasefire regime has increased up to 1,291, he added.

To date, the ceasefire agreement is signed with the representatives of the 1291 villages, Rudskoy added.

He also noted that the number of "moderate opposition" units, which declared the commitment to respect the cessation of hostilities has increased to 178.

Rudskoy added that in towns and cities, with which truce has been reached, and the objects of infrastructure and social services destroyed during military operations are being restored, while the supply of electricity and water is being resumed.

Russian Army Doctors continue to provide assistance to the residents of Aleppo where more than 9,800 people have already received it.

Russian aircraft and Special Operations Forces have made a crucial contribution to the defeat of ISIS group near Palmyra, Rudskoy noted.

The Syrian army recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra from ISIL for the second time in a year with the help from allied forces and Russian warplanes.

Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire. The ancient city of culture of late antiquity fell under the control of Islamic State militant groups from mid-May 2015 with the terrorists blowing up several historic monuments, including the 1,800-year-old Monumental Arch of Palmyra, most of the Temple of Bel, and the Temple of Baalshamin.
