US Jews threaten to pull backing of Ankara: Turkish MP
The Jewish lobby in the United States has said it
would state a neutral stance during discussions on the alleged
genocide of Armenians in Congress, a Turkish lawmaker has said upon
return from the U.S.
Mithat Melen, who represents Turkey`s Nationalist Movement Party,
told the local press that after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan delivered a strongly-worded statement condemning Israel`s
latest military action in the Middle East during a recent forum in
Davos, the Jewish community in the U.S. said it would not back
Ankara at the upcoming congressional discussions.
"The Jewish community has made it clear that it would not support
passage of a bill on the `genocide of Armenians` in US Congress,
but it wouldn`t counter its adoption either." . According to Melen,
even if the US legislature does not pass the "genocide" bill,
President Barack Obama is highly likely to use this term in his
address on April 24, the day considered by Armenians as the date
marking mass killings allegedly committed in the Ottoman Empire in
the early 20th century. Melen reminded that Obama had pledged
during his election campaign to recognize the
"genocide."
