Tehran says Russia’s re-use of Nojeh airbase is not on agenda
By Gunay Hasanova
The Russian bombers’ re-use of the Nojeh Airbase in Iran’s western province of Hamadan is not on the agenda right now, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.
“For time being, I think the issue is over,” Qasemi said during a press conference in Tehran on December 5, Trend's correspondent reported from the event.
Qasemi further noted that the future cooperation depends on the situation.
“We have no essential problem in this regard, but necessary arrangements would have to be made in advance,” Qasemi said.
Nojeh Airbase is part of the Western Area Command of the Iranian Air Force. The base is operated by the civil government.
In mid-August, Russia announced that its bomber planes are deployed in Iran and from there the bombers launch attacks on the IS (Islamic State, ISIS, aka ISIL) terrorist group's positions in Syria.
It was the first time a foreign power had used an Iranian base since World War Two.
Some Iranian lawmakers called the move a breach of Iran's constitution which forbids "the establishment of any kind of foreign military base in Iran, even for peaceful purposes".
Syria has been suffering from an armed conflict since March 2011, which, according to the UN, has so far claimed over 500,000 lives. Militants from various armed groups are confronting the Syrian government troops. The IS, YPG, and PYD are the most active terrorist groups in Syria.
Tehran and Moscow share the same stance towards Syria, supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad.
