By Laman Ismayilova
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov tasked the government to ensure technical re-equipment of oil refineries, the Turkmenistan TV channel reported on November 22.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Turkmen Cabinet of Ministers, where Berdimuhamedov stressed the need to improve the efficiency of oil and gas industry.
Turkmenistan annually produces about 10 million tons of oil, the biggest part of which is processed at two refineries in the cities of Turkmenbashi and Seydi.
Earlier it was reported that it is planned to build several other refineries in Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan plans to bring the capacity of the oil refining industry to 20 million tons in 2020, to 22 million tons in 2025 and to 30 million tons in 2030.
Turkmenistan has abundant reserves in the energy resources. The country’s oil production in 2015 amounted to 12.7 million tons, the rate is higher by 5.0 percent in comparison to the figures shown in 2014, according to the BP energy outlook. The country’s share in the world’s total oil production amounted to 0.3 percent in 2015.
Being the sixth in the world for the volume of natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan produces about 70-80 billion cubic meters of gas a year, while most of its proven gas reserves are located in the Amu Darya basin in the south-east and in the Murgab South Caspian basins in the western part of the country.
