The Marrakesh Conference is a decisive turning point in the implementation process of the Paris Agreement, calling for a coordinated involvement of all actors to preserve life on earth for future generations.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI made the remark while addressing the high-level segment of the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), taking place in Marrakesh city from 7 to 18 November 2016, the Moroccan embassy in Baku reported.

Azerbaijan is participating in the COP22 with an important delegation, headed by Mr. Huseyngulu Baghirov, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources.

The King emphasized that the organization of this conference in Morocco for the second time after the COP7 in 2001 contributes considerably to raise the international awareness on the issue of global warming, and reflects the commitment of Morocco to the multilateral framework to address international challenges.

The organization of COP22 is recognition of the Moroccan leadership in its region and in the world in the field of renewable energy and sustainable development.

Morocco has set the objective to increase the contribution of clean energy sources in its national needs to 52% by 2030, the Royal Speech insisted.

The King further called for the strengthening of North-South solidarity, in particular the assistance of developing countries that do not have the means to protect themselves from climate risks, particularly in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

In this regard, His Majesty declined the priorities to be retained in terms of support to vulnerable countries, such as financial assistance, transfer of technology, honoring the commitments of the advanced countries to mobilize the $ 100 billion that was the cornerstone of the Paris Agreement, and finally the involvement of non-state actors in “Global Climate Action”.

In addition, the development of renewable energies has been raised as a national priority in Morocco through the adoption of an energy mix including, in addition to fossil fuels, renewable energies such as wind, hydro and solar.

Considered by Climate Action Tracker as one of the four most environmentally friendly countries in the world, Morocco committed itself to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32 % by 2030. Long before, the Kingdom had been distinguished by its avant-garde policy of hydropower dam construction since the 1980s.

Furthermore, in February 2016, King Mohammed VI inaugurated Phase I and launched Phases II and III of Noor Station, the largest solar power plant in the world. By 2018, it is expected to produce 500 megawatts with largely competitive production costs compared to conventional means of electricity production.
