Iran, Australia ink deals on cooperation in aviation

By Gunay Hasanova

Iran and Australia have inked two agreements for aviation and air transportation cooperation, IRNA reported.

The document was undersigned by representatives of Iran Civil Aviation Organization and Australia’s Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development in Canberra, Australia.

The documents allow both countries’ planes to fly in each other’s airspaces and land at the airports, as well as, to receive airline services in both countries, according to the message.

The documents also consider the launch of direct flights between several Iranian and Australian cities.

Australia's bilateral relationship with Iran is long-standing, with a historically strong trade relationship.

However, the bilateral relations between the two countries have experienced a decline in recent years, mainly due to the imposition of a series of sanctions on Iran.

Besides implementing UN Security Council sanctions on Iran, Australia has also imposed autonomous sanctions against the Islamic Republic. These sanctions related to gold, precious metals, and arms, as well as energy and financing sectors.

However following the nuke deal, new opportunities emerged for the cooperation of the two countries.
