Presidential election campaign starts in Turkmenistan

The presidential election campaign started in Turkmenistan on October 24, the Turkmen Central Election Commission reported.

Nomination of candidates will begin 60 days before the election day. The presidential election will be held on February 12, 2017 in accordance with the decision of the Parliament of Turkmenistan.

The Central Election Commission discussed a number of organizational issues at the meeting. Invited international experts and observers will be monitoring the course of the upcoming campaign.

In accordance with the decision of the Central Election Commission, the corresponding polling stations will be set up at the diplomatic missions of Turkmenistan abroad for compatriots who will be outside of the country on the election day.

“Participants of the meeting were unanimous that their main goal is to do everything for the next Turkmen presidential election to be held at the highest organizational level, in strict compliance with the current electoral laws of the country and international law,” the message said.

Incumbent Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was elected to this post twice.

During the last election in February 2012, 97.4 percent of voters cast their ballots for him. President of Turkmenistan is elected for a term of seven years, according to the recently adopted new constitution of the country.
