Uzbekistan proposes to create an international Islamic research center in Samarkand under the OIC auspices for studying the heritage of the Muslim world’s scholars and thinkers, said Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Acting President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev adressed the 43rd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on October 18.

He added that creation of such a center is one of the priorities of the Uzbek chairmanship in the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.

Mirziyoyev reminded that such prominent Islamic figures as Muhammad al-Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi, Al-Biruni, al-Khwarizmi, al-Maturidi and others lived in the territory of Uzbekistan.

Priorities of the Uzbek chairmanship in the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers also include development of intercultural and educational dialogue, scientific and technical, as well as trade and investment cooperation between the OIC member countries.

Another priority is to join forces in the fight against the ideology of terrorism and extremism.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was established in September 1969 to ensure Islamic solidarity in social, economic and political spheres.

The organization has 57 member states. Uzbekistan became an OIC member in 1996.
