US says may station military bases in Georgia
The United States may station military bases in Georgia to counter Russia`s military presence in the Georgian rebel region of Abkhazia, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza has warned.
Bryza said Washington was concerned over Russia`s intention to set up naval forces, aviation and two military bases in the unrecognized republic and may develop a plan to restrain Moscow`s moves.
Tbilisi believes that if Moscow reconsiders its plans regarding Abkhazia, US bases may not be stationed in the Georgian territory.
Reports are circulating that Georgia has launched talks with the U.S. on stationing American bases in the port city of Poti and Marneuli. The issue was high on agenda during a visit by the General Commander of US Forces in Europe Carter Ham to the South Caucasus republic late in January. The US delegation discussed with Tbilisi prospects for future military cooperation.
