Armenians apologizing to Turks in reciprocal campaign
Armenians have begun to apologize to Turks in
response to an online signature campaign launched earlier by a
group of Turkish citizens to apologize to Armenians for alleged
World War I-era killings of their countrymen.
The Turkish-based Radical newspaper reported that a group of Armenian intellectuals have started apologizing for actions committed in the late 20th century. A particular emphasis in the campaign is expressing regret for the terror acts committed against Turks worldwide by the Armenian ASALA terror group in the 1970-80s. Supporters of the campaign believe that apologies should be mutual. Turks have apologized to Armenians, and it is now the Armenians` turn to make a reciprocal move, they say.
The year-long campaign, launched on the www.ozurdiliyoruz.com website in December by a group of Turkish public representatives, seeks to extend an apology for the alleged mass killings in the Ottoman Empire that Armenians call genocide. The initiative has sparked concern both in Turkey and in Azerbaijan.
