Kyrgyzstan orders to shut US air base
Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev has said the United States must close the military base in Kyrgyzstan.
"Kyrgyzstan will close the U.S. military base in Manas after Washington refused to negotiate better compensation," Bakiev said after talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow.
The United States has said it hoped to continue operating the air base.
Washington set up the Manas base in 2001 to support anti-terror operations in Afghanistan by coalition forces. The base is currently home to more than 1,000 military personnel.
