Polls close in Georgian vote; peaceful and democratic quality of elections confirmed

The polls have closed in the third free and fair elections held in Georgia since the Georgian Dream Government came to power in 2012, with no major incidents recorded, Georgian government reported.

“This was a truly free and fair election, which firmly cements Georgia’s democracy,” said the Prime Minister. “I am proud that so many Georgians came out to vote today. The real winners today are the Georgian people who made their voices heard at the ballot box.”

The Georgian vote has taken place without major incidents. At the few polling places, where issues arose in the final hours before polls closed, they were addressed swiftly and effectively to prevent disruption of the political process. Working with the Central Election Commission, law enforcement, NGOs, and all political parties, the Government made every effort to ensure citizens had their say in line with the highest international standards.

The results today reflect the true will of the Georgian people as confirmed by the numerous international and domestic election observers who monitored the election, as well as the peaceful pre-election period.

“I would like to thank all foreign and domestic election observers for their commitment to Georgia’s democracy and help in protecting the will of the Georgian people; as well as international and local media for their full coverage of the election process,” said the Prime Minister. “Georgia is a model of the success that can be achieved through making long-term investments in democratic institutions.”

The vote-counting process now begins with guarantees of the utmost accuracy and transparency. Full preliminary results are expected at 6am local time tomorrow.
