Iran’s leader warns against “ageing population”

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has once again warned about “ageing population” amid concerns over declining birth rate in the country.

“The issue of ageing population is an unsolvable problem and nowadays the developed countries even have no solutions to the problem,” IRNA news agency quoted Khamenei as saying at a meeting with the members of the country’s supreme statistics council Sep. 13.

He added that the country’s officials should have stopped policies aimed at controlling population growth.

The leader also underlined the significant role of statistics in developing policies and called on Iranians to actively take part in the upcoming round of the nationwide census to be conducted next month.

A national census is taken every five years in Iran and the country will carry out next round of general census from October 16.

Earlier in 2014, Ayatollah Khamenei published his 14-point plan to speed up the country’s population growth.
