Speaker accused of money laundering
A money laundering crime has been exposed in
Armenia`s banking system, local reports say.
Aykakan Jamanak newspaper has revealed that $95 million has been transferred from Cyprus to Armenia in several transactions. The prosecutor-general`s office has determined that Hovik Abrahamian, Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, is directly involved in this money laundering.
After registering the transfers, the Armenian central bank informed Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian who, in his turn, communicated the information to Prosecutor-General Agvan Ovsepian. However, criminal proceedings have yet to be instituted against the speaker, allegedly because a discussion with the speaker has cleared him of suspicions.
The person who organized the money laundering received 20% of the entire amount, the report said.
