Erdogan calls decision on emergency state Turkey’s internal affair

The state of emergency imposed in Turkey after the military coup attempt is the internal affair of the country, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on August 4, Anadolu Agency reported.
“By introducing the state of emergency, Turkey suspended the implementation of the agreement on the European Convention on Human Rights,” he added.
Previously, Turkey’s Minister for EU affairs Omer Celik said that the European Union (EU) should welcome the fact that the military coup attempt in Turkey was prevented, reported TRT Haber News on August 3.
“Turkish people's support of democracy demonstrates that the country’s population has a concept of healthy democracy,” said Celik.
“Currently, the state of emergency is applicable on the French territory as well,” said Erdogan.
Over 20,000 people were detained and nearly 10,000 people were arrested after the coup attempt in Turkey, said the Turkish president.
On July 15 evening, Turkish authorities said a military coup attempt took place in the country. Meanwhile, a group of servicemen announced about transition of power to them.
However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the death toll as a result of the military coup attempt stood at 246 people excluding the coup plotters and over 2,000 people were wounded.
Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in Turkey on July 20.
