Russia to oppose CIS strife
Russia will counter any attempts to break up the CIS, the successor of the USSR, and oppose those policies seeking military and political confrontation between member states, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.
Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Lavrov added that attempts to create confrontations and actual conflicts were hampering cooperation. "We need to find mechanisms for negotiated settlements of such conflicts," Lavrov said.
Lavrov added that CIS countries should not be "turned into hostages" of someone`s geo-political projects and be left facing the dilemma "if you are not with us, you are against us."
"Russia will resist such tendencies and try to secure respect for the interests of our partners and their treatment as equal members of the international world," he said.
