ANAS favors nanotech in oil production

By Nigar Orujova

It is important to apply nanotechnology in the oil industry, Akif Alizade, President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, said.

ANAS should conduct research in the use of nanotechnology in the oil sector in an effort to efficiently operate the oil fields, he said at a meeting of the Presidium of the Academy to discuss the use and exploitation of oil fields in Azerbaijan.

A wonder of the 21st century, nanotechnologies, or engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale, can be applied in a wide range of sciences, including ecology, medicine, space, cybernetics, the industry, and the oil sector.

The problem of exploitation of oil deposits has always been relevant, Alizade noted.

He recalled the saying of Khoshbakht Yusifzade that the old oil fields and extraction of residual oil is an important issue.

To increase oil production, scientists must conduct more in-depth studies, he stressed.

The scientist added that contacts with the Azerbaijan State Oil Company should be expanded.

“To implement an effective field operation, the achievements of chemical, biological and other sciences should be used,” he said. “Research should be carried out on the application of nanotechnology in the oil sector, and the State Oil Company should put forward different proposals in this regard.”

Alizade also referred to the possibility of turning the experimental-industrial plant of ANAS into the industrial park.

The main purpose is to enable scientists to offer the most efficient method of producing oil without large financial costs based on their own experience.

Oil and gas production is one of the main priorities for the economy of Azerbaijan, which is now also diversified with high technology, tourism and other industries.

The application of nanotechnologies in the Azerbaijani oil industry began in 2004 by Academician Azad Mirzajanzade.

SOCAR's scientists and specialists are working on the development of nanotechnologies, testing and introduction of such technologies in laboratories and in production.

The company has developed the Nano-oil program covering 2010-2015, which consists of four parts: Nanoproduction, Nanodrilling, Nanopetrochemistry, and Econanooil. Moreover, Nanotechnologies scientific-production center was established to develop new nanotechnologies.

Outcomes of joint researches carried out by employees of Baku State University and SOCAR indicate that technical and economic indicators of technological processes of the oil industry were drastically improved.

As a result of the application of the new system, the oil recovery has doubled in wells with low productivity.
