Iran may start drilling in Caspian Sea by year-end

11 April 2012 14:25 (UTC+04:00)

Iran will be able to start drilling works on the Caspian Sea by the end of 2012, head of the Iranian company NeftKhazar Ali Usuli was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying.

Usuli noted that most of the operations will be carried out in the Iranian northern province of Mazandaran, adding that large-scale works could cause financial difficulties, as the government will not have enough funds to finance them.

Usuli said that if the Oil Ministry and Mazandaran`s local authorities provide financial support, the existing drilling platform can start operating by the year-end.

Iran`s Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said Iran has stepped up gas exploration on the Caspian Sea coast, Mehr reported.

Iran launched the first drilling rig Amir Kabir, formerly Iran-Alborz, in the Caspian Sea in 2009. The platform, developed by Iranian engineers, was constructed by Sedra company in the Neka coast.
