Obama: U.S. upbeat on further energy co-op with Azerbaijan
BAKU – The United States is committed to continued cooperation with Azerbaijan to promote global energy security and diversify energy supply routes, as well as stability and prosperity throughout the Caucasus, US President Barack Obama said in a message read out at the opening of a major oil and gas exhibition in Baku Tuesday.
The letter, read out by Richard Morningstar, US Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy, says that the vision and determination of Azerbaijan’s late President Heydar Aliyev helped to give birth to the East-West Energy Corridor, and investments made in major energy projects have brought Azerbaijan and its international partners considerable economic, commercial and strategic benefits.
Obama wrote that the successful cooperation between the government and the private sector in Azerbaijan has greatly contributed to meeting the global demand for energy resources.
The White House leader noted that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s decision to join the Southern Corridor of pipelines, one of the world’s boldest and most complex natural gas projects, will give an impetus to the outset of a new era in the development of Azerbaijan’s energy sector and boost economic growth.
The Southern Corridor is a priority EU energy project diversifying supply routes and sources and increasing EU energy security. It includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), White Stream, and Turkey-Greece-Italy (ITGI) pipeline.
