Azerbaijan keen on Pan-Arab gas pipeline
BAKU - Azerbaijan is interested in the implementation of the
Pan-Arab gas pipeline project, Energy Minister Natig Aliyev told
his Egyptian counterpart IN Baku.
Egypt's Oil Minister Sameh Fahmy, who heads a delegation of top
energy officials, including the president of Egypt’s national gas
company, arrived in Azerbaijan on Wednesday to explore avenues for
cooperation with the resource-rich South Caucasus republic in the
energy sector.
Aliyev said the construction of a pipeline linking the gas systems
of Turkey and Syria would allow Azeri gas to be exported through
Turkish territory to Syria and Jordan.
Early in June, a package of agreements on transit of Azeri gas via
Turkey were signed, paving the way for Azeri gas exports in various
directions.
Last week, Syria made a proposal to buy 1-1.5bn cubic meters of
Azeri gas for the period of 20 years. Syrian experts say Azeri gas
supplies can be launched starting from mid-2011 - once the
construction of the connecting pipeline between Turkey and Syria
has been completed.
Azerbaijan produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field
in the Caspian Sea. During Phase 2 of Shahdaniz development,
scheduled to begin in 2012-2013, gas exports are planned to a
number of countries, including European markets.
