Southern Corridor high on EU commissioner’s Baku visit agenda
Gunther Oettinger, the European Union Commissioner for Energy, has
pointed to the importance of expanding energy cooperation with
Azerbaijan ahead of his visit to the country on Thursday, according
to the EU representation.
"Azerbaijan and the EU have developed a strong relationship on energy issues over time. In the context of the Eastern Partnership, I look forward to discuss energy matters and deepen further our partnership. Progress on the Southern Corridor will be high on the agenda."
Oettinger will meet President Ilham Aliyev, Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. Discussions will cover energy issues, including energy security for Azerbaijan and the EU, and gas pipeline projects. Oettinger will also visit Sangachal Oil and Gas Terminal and hold discussions with representatives of the state energy firm SOCAR and European oil companies in Baku.
The new European Commission, including Energy Commissioner Oettinger, took office on February 10, 2010. This is his first visit to Azerbaijan as European Energy Commissioner.
The Southern Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It aims to increase energy security for European countries by diversifying sources of energy and supply routes. The corridor includes the Nabucco, Turkey-Greece-Italy (TGI) and trans-Adriatic pipeline projects, but building the Nabucco conduit, which will pump Caspian and Central Asian gas to European markets bypassing Russia, is paramount for the 27-member bloc. Azerbaijan is one of the potential suppliers for the Nabucco pipeline.*
