Azerbaijan agrees with Syria on gas exports
Syria and Azerbaijan have agreed to sign a memo of understanding for buying 1-1.5 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas annually through Turkey, the Syria-oil news portal reported.
During a meeting in Damascus on Tuesday, Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Eng. Sufian Allaw and Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev also discussed potential cooperation to establish joint ventures between the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR).
Allaw said "Azerbaijani gas will be used domestically and the extra amount will be exported to Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Greece and Italy through the Arab gas pipeline."
"It will also contribute to boosting relations through participation of Azerbaijani investors in joint projects with Syria," he added.
Minister Aliyev expressed willingness to provide Syria with the amount of gas agreed upon and to exchange expertise in the fields of oil and energy, Syria-oil said.
According to the Azerbaijani energy ministry, the South Caucasus republic will begin gas exports to Syria in late 2010. The distribution networks between Syria and Turkey, where Azerbaijani gas is being delivered by the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (BTE) pipeline through Georgia, have been linked and technical issues resolved.
Azerbaijan produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea, which holds estimated reserves of 2 trillion cubic meters. During Phase 2 of Shahdaniz development, scheduled to begin in 2012-2013, gas exports are planned to a number of countries, including European markets.*
