US envoy talks energy with Azeri officials
US Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy, Richard Morningstar, paid a
short-term visit to Baku on Friday.
During his meetings with Azerbaijani officials, Morningstar discussed future US support for the efforts seeking to diversify routes of supplying oil and gas from the resource-rich region to European and world markets as well as cooperation issues, said Terry Davidson, the spokesman for the US embassy in Baku.
In his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, the parties mulled issues of energy and regional cooperation between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov hosted Morningstar as well. Discussions centered on prospects for expanding US-Azerbaijan relations in the field of energy, as well as the energy projects being implemented in the Caspian region.
The US envoy had arrived in the region on Tuesday to attend the energy summit which was to be held in the Georgian town of Batumi. He earlier held several closed-door meetings with officials in Tbilisi. However, since the format of the Batumi summit was altered and an international energy conference held instead, Morningstar left the Georgian capital for Baku.*
