Iran seeks use of Azeri gas storage

20 October 2009 22:29 (UTC+04:00)
Iran is seeking to use Azerbaijan`s subterranean gas storage located in the borderline areas, an energy executive visiting Baku has said.
Masoud Samivand, the Managing Director of the Iranian Gas Storage Company (IGSC), said talks on the issue began in 2008. The Iranian representatives` visit seeks to continue the discussions.
While in Azerbaijan, Iranian experts will also study the technical condition of the available reservoirs. According to Samivand, Iran will fill the reservoirs in summer and retrieve 15 million cubic meters of gas per day from the storage area in winter.
Moreover, the Iranian energy executives suggested building a new gas pipeline to link the country with Azerbaijan due to the substandard condition of the existing pipeline.
Iran faced a shortage of gas in the winter two years ago due to inclement weather and even had to suspend gas exports to its foreign partners. Tehran is now trying to prevent a reoccurrence of such problems.
