The Inauguration of the first green public buildings, which belong to Azerbaijan’s energy giant SOCAR, took place on September 21 in the city of Sumgayit.

At least 400 people will benefit from energy efficient buildings, retrofitted as part of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) project on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA).

Ghulam Isaczai, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Azerbaijan, and Rovnag Abdullayev, President of SOCAR, participated in the launch event, Azertac reported.

Service buildings, which will use approximately 20 per cent less energy, have been retrofitted in line with the principles of integrated building design approach and will serve as a good example for showing how to reduce energy consumption in public buildings.

“Azerbaijan has big saving potential regarding energy efficiency in public buildings. With support of UNDP, which has great experience in energy efficiency worldwide, this pilot activity can serve as a model for public sector,” said the UN Resident Coordinator.

Technical aspects of the service buildings include energy efficient windows, floor heating systems, energy efficient ventilation systems, decorative facade cover layer, heating isolation systems and solar power systems.

NAMA project is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF), UNDP and SOCAR.
