Ankara seeks EU states` clear stance on Nabucco
Turkey is seeking a more clear-cut stance from EU
states regarding the Nabucco pipeline project that seeks to export
gas from the Caspian and Central Asia regions to Europe, Energy
Minister Hilmi Guler has said.
Guler added that Europeans are sometimes addressing the issue on a governmental level and at other times through companies, which causes certain misunderstanding. Therefore, the Turkish government has sent a letter requesting European states seeking participation in the project to confirm their involvement. "We want the EU to send us a text saying it agrees," the minister said.
Guler emphasized that if European countries reply to Ankara`s appeal by the end of April, an inter-governmental agreement paving the way for the implementation of the Nabucco project could be signed by June.
The EU and Turkey face political and economic differences concerning the Western-backed project. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned early this year that if the 27-member bloc poses stumbling blocks to the country`s EU admission, Ankara might reconsider its backing of the project. Moreover, it is still uncertain how much gas to be transported via the conduit will be supplied to Turkey.
