Soldier killed, another wounded in Armenian attack
An Azerbaijani soldier was killed in an attack by
Armenian armed forces on Friday.
Uzeyir Khasiyev, 19, died after being shot in the head after several Armenian soldiers crossed into the Azerbaijani-controlled area in a village on the frontline Terter district during the early morning hours and launching an offensive, local media reported.
Another Azerbaijani soldier, Islam Huseyibov, was injured in the neck during the shooting.
The Azerbaijan Defense Ministry has confirmed the reports and is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident.
No information is available about casualties sustained by the Armenian side.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia`s territorial claims. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan`s internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in May 1994, but over a decade of efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have achieved no results.
